Spirituality May Be Hot in America, But 76 Million Adults Never Attend Church March 20, 2006

(Ventura, CA) - Marketers devote billions of dollars to penetrating the Baby Boomer market the generation of 77 million individuals that populate the nation. There is another market segment equally as large that is of interest to the faith community: the 76 million adults who regularly avoid going to church. Leaders who rise to today's situation will not only need to carry certain qualities and skills, they will need to grasp the complexities of adaptive leadership that brings about lasting transformational change. Charisma may bring energy to a situation, but charisma alone will not bring about transformation. Transformational efforts often fail because they solely relied upon charisma when what was needed was stamina. Lasting transformation that ushers forth an authentic church usually means the incorporation of the following:
Intentional and persistent attention to the church's ancient and authentic story and its implications. Perhaps the question to be asked of the system is this: If we believed with every fiber of our being that God has raised Jesus from the dead, what would our life together look like? What would worship, faith formation, and compassion look like? How would we be organized? Read more http://jmm.aaa.net.au/articles/17018.htm

SUNDAY, March 26, 2006: Sunday was especially blessed of the Lord. We are so thankful for the presence of God that was in each service. Thank God for Chad Byars who came to the altar Sunday morning. We rejoiced with him as tears of joy flowed. This was the first time that folks here can remember that Chad was in the altar here at Huntingdon. Praise God! We were also exited to hear that Kim and Chad are expecting twins. Sunday evening was also blessed with the presence of the Lord. We sang, praised, worshipped and worshipped as God's presence was so very evident.

TODAY, March 29, 2006: Today was the Lentin Service and Luncheon at the First Presbyterian Church. We enjoyed being with Pastor Roger Patton and the folks there. They were gracious to allow us to lead singing and bring the message. We were also blessed to be with other churches, Baptist and Methodist. Thanks to our folks who came and brought tea and dessert. We thank God for fellow Christians who love the Lord and are in His service.

FUTURE POSTINGS

Due to time contraints and scheduling, I will not be posting every day or even 3-4 days a week. Time considerations and other responsibilities have necessitated a weekly or, at most, a twice a week posting schedule. These postings will only include pertinent local church news and international, state of TN and district COGOP events and scheduling that affect the local church.

We appreciate each one who stops by and want to encourage you to visit other sites that encourage, enlighten and challenge you in the things of the Lord. Visit the link below to find dozens and dozens of helpful sites for just about anything in ministry.

YESTERDAY, TODAY, TONIGHT AND TOMORROW

Yesterday, Karen and I knocked on several doors and witnessed to different ones in South Carroll County. We also did some work for the Carroll County Volunteer Rescue Squad. This was an interesting day to say the least - especially with some of the 4-legged canines that we met. One large bulldog tried to the knock the door down to get to me and I swiftly and curtly moved back to my car as I heard the lady say, "We are not interested." NO PROBLEM! Another bulldog barked and barked until a young man came to the car and said, "Oh he just a big baby and won't hurt anyone." His bark and looks didn't communicate that to me but Karen actually got out of the car and played with him as I talked with the young man's mother. Karen got back in the car chuckling at me for being so skiddish. Well, I got bit once in the posteria by one of those critters and it has left a lasting impression on my adrenaline gland - get my drift. I saw dogs from the size that would fit in my hand to ones that could rear up, put their paws on my 6 foot frame shoulders and look me square in the eye. Anyway we met some interesting people and enjoyed conversations about the Lord and the work of the CCVRS.

Today was another great time of worship and fellowship in the Lord. The first series in the topic of Covenant Relationship dealt with the Old Covenant and parts of the New Covenant. April 2 will be Covenant Sunday. We are praying for a time of commitment to the church and the work of the Lord. There were two in the altar seeking the Lord this morning - Tyler Nicholson and Gracie Florres. We thank the Lord for His presence and for the New Covenant Relationship that he mediated, sacrificed his life and body and shed his blood for and given to - God's only begotten Son - Jesus Christ.

Tonight Dr. Chuck Burks preached the first message here at the church. We thank God for the challenge that he gave us to be a growing church. We are looking forward to hearing more from Chuck in the future. He and his wife are coming to church with us and waiting on the Lord for an open door to pastor somewhere in the future. We thank God for Chuck and his wife Ragene. They are now a part of us and, prayerfully, God will help us to make them feel that they have found a home in the church of God of prophecy. Dr. Burks used to drive by the Church of God of Prophecy sign and say, "I better stay away from that church, thats a wierd name for a church and it sounds cultish." After meeing with him and sharing with him for several weeks, he understands that we are Christians who love the Lord and want others to know Jesus too.

Tomorrow Karen and I will be going on a getaway for a couple days. We should be back by late Tuesday or sometime Wednesday. Your prayers are appreciated as we seek God. . . . . .

TODAY

I am continuing in reading and writing for the DMin. I am in the course on leadership. It seems I get very little done each day but the "turtle won the race not the rabbit."

Today, I will be visiting more in South Carroll County through work I am doing for the Carroll Co. Vol. Rescue Squad. I have made a personal commitment in this work to pray with any that "open the door" for prayer and to speak with them about Jesus Christ. Yesterday, I had opportunity to pray for one gentleman who has cancer, to speak to three others and encourage them. I have also made a personal commitment for mission giving in this work. This will go to Harvest Partners and to other mission work (VOS, One Child Fund, etc.). I pray the Lord go with us and direct us today as we knock on doors. Sister Cathy Coleman lives in this area and we plan to visit with her and the family a while today.

I will be continuing to study and pray for the first message tomorrow in the series on Covenant Relationship. We serve a Covenant God. He dedicates and commits Himself to His people and wants His people to dedicate and commit themselves to Him and His word.

PRAYER

Prayer, borrowed from Pastor Don Brock http://harvestcenter.blogspot.com/

Dear Lord, I want to abide in You as You abide in me, to "live in the Spirit." As I cannot bear fruit of myself, unless I abide in You. You are the vine, I am a branch. I want to bear much fruit for You, for without You, I can do nothing. I do not want to wither and be useless. If I abide in You, and Your Words bide in me, I may ask what I desire, and it shall be done for Me, because when I abide in You and You in me, my will aligns with Your will for me. By this You are glorified, that I bear much fruit." (based on John 14:4-5, 7-8) Thank You Master Gardener, for pruning me and nourishing me and providing light that I may grow and be healthy. In Jesus' name, amen.

CHOOSE LIFE FUND RAISER LICENSE PLATE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A federal appeals court on Friday ruled Tennessee can sell license plates that promote "choose life," even though it doesn't offer one with an abortion rights message.
A three-judge panel on the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ruled in the appeal of a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee.

The group had sued over the specialty license plate approved by the Legislature in 2003 on First Amendment grounds and won a ruling against the tag from a lower court.

In a 2-to-1 ruling this morning, the court concluded the one-sidedness on a contentious political issue may be ill-advised, but ruled the First Amendment doesn't prohibit it.

Extra fees motorists pay for the plates would go to New Life Resources -- an anti-abortion group.

The plates had stirred considerable debate. Governor Bredesen let the measure become law but declined to sign it. He also urged lawmakers to develop a new approach to deciding which causes would benefit from the sale of specialty plates.

We visited several houses and prayed for one spcifically. Mr. Dover requests prayer. He has cancer and is in need of prayer. Also Mr. Michael Taylor and Mr. James Perry requests prayer for financial blessing. We thank God for the opportunity to meet new people in the area. We are praying for open doors to minister as we go.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, sometimes it seems that seconds, minutes, hours and days go by with no real ministry on my part. I ask for Your guidance, grace and wisdom in doing my daily work for You. Help me to first of all, be close to You and commune with You in a time of private, personal devotion and prayer each day. I ask for Your presence to be near me and to be constantly aware of Your presence in what I am doing. My humaness and fleshly desires get in the way sometimes. Deliver me from self-will. I surrender my will to Yours. I pray for a greater anointing, a greater filling and greater walk in the Holy Spirit. I pray for all pastors and ministers today, who are serving in Your harvest field. Give them strength and stamina. Renew their minds and spirits with Your grace and power. Bless them with healing and health. Deliver them from the attacks of the adversary, the accuser and from wicked and unreasonable persons. Help them to be faithful and accountable to You and to those over them in the Lord. O God, how we pastors and ministers need You so desperately! I ask these favors and blessings in the Wonderful, Powerful, Blessed Name of Jesus Christ Your Son. Amen!

PRAYER MEETING

God blessed wonderfully again as we had prayer meeting at the McKenzie Rehabilitation and Health facility. Sister Lennie Mae Crossno was not feeling well so we prayed with her in her room. There were four new people in our services. We sang, prayed, ministered in the word and prayed for each one. God truly blessed. These precious people are often forgotten but God never forgets his children. We are blessed to minister to these precious souls.

Praise, Prayer & Scriptures

Thank God today! Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised! When I think of his goodness and what he has done for me, I could sing, sing, dance, dance, shout, shout - all night, all night! What a mighty God we serve, what a might God we serve. Angels bow before him, heavenly hosts adore him - what a mighty God we serve! Glory to God!

I pray today for mothers who have aborted their children. I pray that they will find peace in their hearts from the only true source of peace - the Prince of Peace - Jesus Christ. I pray that abortion clinics will open their eyes to the tragic, horrific thing they are doing in aborting these little gifts from God. I pray that this nation will reverse the legislation for aborting little unborn humans who have a fully formed recognizable body at 2 months pregnancy. I ask you heavenly Father to give fathers in this country the will and strength to say no to abortion and to care for their children. Help us as the church to be more active in this "mission field." Help us to become more mature and have more wisdom in dealing with those whose lives have been affected by an abortion. I pray for the man I talked to this week who says he has continued mental anxiety and depression from allowing two of his little sons to be aborted. He testified to being born again but says he still has days and nights of nightmares and panic attacks. I pray that the peace of God will be flooded into him in a greater measure. I pray for a greater understanding of your desire for every child that you create to be born and to be a born-again child of yours serving you and worshipping you all the days of their lives. In Christ's name. AMEN!

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I (God) formed thee (Jeremiah) in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Psalms 139:13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me (Psalmist David) in my mother's womb.

Psalms 22:9, 10 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.

Psalms 71:6 By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee.

Luke 1:15 For he (John the Baptist) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Gal. 1:15, 16a But when it pleased God, who separated me (Apostle Paul) from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen;. . .

YESTERDAY

Karen and I took most of the day off yesterday. We traveled some and went shopping. Karen bought the yarn that she is using to make an afghan(sp?) for world missions. Over $300.00 was turned in Sunday and we are anticipating a great month for our Harvest Partners. The church also gave $350.00 in Sunday evening's service to a needy family here locally.

Karen had an interview yesterday for a 6th grade teaching position. We are still praying that God's will be done in her job search. She had an interview for a temp. secretary position with the Chamber of Commerce on Monday - will hear from that by first of next week. She is supposed to go for another interview this coming Friday. She had a difficult time with the scheduling at Wal-Mart and had to resign. I supported her decision 150%.

I did some computer work last night reloading some software and trying to get my email addresses back together - individuals and groups. I have a different hard-drive now and lost all my previous software and email in a "crash."

We watched Tennessee State Overseer E. C. McKinley on streaming video from the Bahamas National Convention last night from 8:30 - 9:30. It was unique hearing him preach and then hearing the Bahama Brass Band strike up after the message. We enjoyed that new experience. Computers and Internet can be and are being a great tool for world-wide ministry.

TODAY

Karen and I got Jason off to college this morning. Then we got ready and went to Bethel College to take care of some business and to State Farm Insurance to take care of some more busines. We then took Jason out to lunch with us. This was the first time we ate with him since before the 3rd of this month. We enjoyed having the buffet at Higs. It is a great place to dine.

Karen and I then visited with Brother and Sister Moore. Brother Moore gave us two coolers full of frozen food to take to a needy family. We came home and delivered the food. I have been studying later this evening and am about to get ready for shut-eye.

MENS DAY AT CAMP HICKORY HILLS

April 7-8 is Men's Day at Camp Hickory Hills. The theme this year is "Suvivor". State Director, Brother Chuck Bailey is working diligently for a great time in the Lord. There will be fellowship, teaching, competition, focus groups, and great food from the Hickory Hills kitchen staff. Make plans to go. There are four or five already planning to attend.

LADIES DAY AT CAMP HICKORY HILLS

Friday evening April 28 and Saturday April 29 is Tennessee Ladies Day at Camp Hickory Hills. Sister Susie Reynolds has been boosting this. Sister Karen will have room for some to ride with her. Karen will be one of the cabin hostesses. Sister Londa Richardson is preparing for a great time. The theme this year is "Joy." Several are already making plans to go. MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND. YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID.

QUOTE

"When a person goes out of the way to find fault with another person, the one who went out of the way to find fault is 'out of the WAY'." Bob Davis

Prayer

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. I ask today for the broken lives of those that I visited with Saturday. Since that time I have seen the ones that were broken with diseases over and over in my mind. Help me to reach out to them with your love and healing touch. I remember how the scripture said Your Son looked on the multitudes and was moved with compasssion. Move me with compassion for the hurting, the sick, the lost, the downcast, the discourged - use me to minister to any and all that I meet today. May they see your Son in my life. Forgive me of doubt and weights that hold me down and may I continue running the race with patience and endurance. In the name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord.

GO FIGURE

The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about whether you want the "politicians" spending your tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases:

a.. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
b.. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
c.. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
d.. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans -

It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division............

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans.

Interesting number, what does it mean?

Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), if each got the money it would be $516, 528.

Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans, your home gets $1,329,787

Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D.C. !!!...................Are all your calculators broken????

Maybe everyone's house should be flooded, then we can all be on the "big easy" street for the rest of our lives, and forget about working, and paying taxes and all that useless stuff!

Why don't we take our taxes and rebuild the houses of the poor there and have plenty left over for them to live on the rest of their lives?

JASON IS HOME

Karen and I were glad to see our son back home from the Spring tour with the Bethel College Renaissance Choir. He traveled and sang in several churches and also at Sea World in San Antonio, Texas. He got home a while ago and we have been talking about his trip. He says he enjoyed it very much but is very tired. We love you son and are very "proud" of you.

UPDATE

Thank God for a great time in the Lord tonight. The worship was awesome. The singing was great and the presence of the Lord was especially close tonight as we sang praises to the king of kings. Brother Ronnie Eaton blessed us with his singing and testimony. Sister Debbie also encouraged us with her testimony. Each song and testimony by those present encouraged us. We are so thankful for God's blessings.

We thank God for the Praise and Worship team that met tonight. We are believing that God will help us in our practices so that we can be prepared to lead the congregation to praise and worship the Lord. Thank God for each one who came and for the renewed spirit that we feel in getting this team together and moving forward for the glory of God.

TODAY & TONIGHT WILL BE OUR MONTHLY SINGING

The Sunday School (lesson on prayer) was outstanding. I enjoyed Sister Donna Crossno's teaching - the time I could be in there. As pastor, I want to encourage everyone to put forth the effort to be in Sunday School.

The worship was great today. The Praise and Worship Team had songs ready and everyone was in their place ready to go. Thank God for leaders who are prepared and in their place ready to worship. The message today, "Let This Mind Be In You. . ." challenged each of us to have spiritual minds, healthy thinking, minds like Christ's mind, lowly minds not low-down minds. We thank God for the new ones who continue to come and be a part of our services. We thank God for the ones who were in the altar today. Sister Kim Byars came forward for prayer for tests she will be having in Memphis this coming week. She is asking everyone to pray for her as she will be in testing starting tomorrow at 10 am. Sister Susie Reynolds came forward for prayer for healing of diabetes and damaged disks in her back from an auto accident. Continue to pray for her.

After church this morning, Sister Karen and I were invited to have birthday dinner with the Reynolds and Rivera families. We were there from 1-3 pm. It was the birthday celebration of Josie Rivera. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Sister Josie. We missed Brother Paul Rivera. He is working out of state with his company for a few weeks. Sister Josie said he called her on her birthday. We will be glad when Brother Paul gets back and is in church with us again.

AT 6 pm tonight is our monthly singing. We enjoy these times to share with each other in testimony, song, poem, recitation, or some other significant reading. Each who desires can share with the congregation tonight. We also have a guest singer coming. I left it as a surprise but some of our people already know that Brother Ronnie Eaton (former member here at Huntingdon and minister of music) is scheduled to be with us tonight. He and Sister Debbie are special to us and we welcome them "home." They were members here for about 20 years before moving to Jackson, TN last fall. We miss them but know that God is using them in Jackson.

PRAISE AND WORSHIP TEAM PRACTICE

This evening at 5 pm will be the first Praise and Worship Team meeting/practice that we have had in quite a while. So far we have these who have expressed a desire to be a part of the Praise and Worship Team - Paul Rivera, Lori Rivera, Cathy Coleman, Delilah Mummel, Lori Worman, and Chuck Burks. Jason will be involved when he can be here. I will be joining them tonight for the meeting/practice and will be involved as much as possible. Dr. Burks will be coordinating the team and we will be seeking to lead Praise and Worship in the best way possible to glorify God almighty. Prayers are requested that we will give our best and that God will receive glory in our efforts.

How to Encourage Your Pastor's Wife

by Donna Bordelon Alder

Jenna (not her real name) was one of the most beautiful women I had ever met. Her fine eyes moved easily into a warm smile and a lovely toss of blond hair curved around the flawless skin of her face and neck. Graceful and slender, she laughed easily and for that reason, I felt she must be happy with life. Although I did not know her well, we had exchanged pleasantries in the lunch line at a pastors' retreat and had chatted on other district occasions. One could not miss her beauty, and her quiet charm — which I mistook for a quiet spirit. Her husband pastored a modest church in a large, neighboring city and, from all appearances, loved her dearly.

On a white, northeast winter Sunday, while her children and husband were in church, she committed suicide in the parsonage.

It's Not the Size of the Church, But Its Health That Counts!

By H. B. London Jr.

I've heard many people say over the last year that, as we enter into the 21st century, it will not be the size of the church that matters, but its health that will ensure its survival.

I doubt if most people realize that more than 100,000 churches in the United States have 50 attendees or less. That means that the average church will have fewer than 100 worshippers this Sunday. So, in spite of all the press the megachurches receive, we are still a nation of small to medium-sized churches.

For some pastors, serving in a small church creates something of a self-image problem. We look at the big church on the hill, compare ourselves to that operation, and feel inadequate or insignificant. NOT SO, MY FRIEND! In The Heart of a Great Pastor (Regal Books), Neil Weisman and I write, "Every assignment is holy ground because Jesus gave Himself for the people who live there. Every place is important because God wants you to accomplish something supernatural there. Every situation is special because ministry is needed there. Like Queen Esther, you have come to the Kingdom for such a time as this. All of these factors give a pastor a much-needed sense of destiny about his assignment." In other words, there are no small assignments, and there are none of you who are insignificant in any way.

PRAYER REQUESTS

I continued to work with the Volunteer Rescue Squad today. I met several citizens of Carroll County in the Clarksburg area. The folks there were very friendly and receptive. They were also very respectful of what the Vol. Rescue Squad does. The following requested prayer.

I prayed with Mr. John Hall who has melanoma, he wants continued prayer. I prayed with Lilly Scates. She is requesting prayer for a water well problem. The well is giving black grit in the water. Mr. Halters has cancer and recently had a stroke and wants prayer. There are so many out there who need the Lord. I witnessed to another gentleman (name withheld) who was a paraplegic. He testified to knowing Christ and being ready to meet the Lord should he die today. Praise the Lord for this testimony.

PRAYER

Dear Lord, I am so much in need of You today and every day. Please come and anoint, strengthen, and give grace for the day. I see people hurting without you and it seems that they can't see you. Help me be an instrument that shows them You. Keep Your children safe from the evil one today. Watch over us and make us more like Your Son. To God be all the glory! Amen!

UPDATE

The past couple days have been very busy. Yesterday very early, Karen and I travelled to Clarksville (95 miles) and visited with and had lunch with Karen's mother. She is a young 78 and still goes bowling with the bowling leagues. We always enjoy the visit and being with her. We also saw Karen's brother-in-law Ronnie and enjoyed visiting with him for a while. We came back through McKenzie and checked on Sister Marie Moore who has been in severe pain with her legs. She told us that she is much better, for which we give God praise. We came back by Hometown Computers and picked up computer loaded with a larger harddrive (my other crashed and I lost all my emails that were saved and some of my software).

We arrived back home around 3:30 pm and rested a while. I reloaded software for a couple hours and studied some last night - hit the sack at 10:45 listening to Judy Jacobs sing and preach on INSP. I wanted to hear all the message on "God's Gonna Turn It Around" but fell asleep before it was over - not sure what time.

This morning we didn't get up until around 7:30 after the long day yesterday. I studied some and checked my email and loaded more software this morning. The morning was very short (it seemed). I met Mark Cunningham today at 10 am and did some leg work for the Carroll County Rescue Squad the rest of the day. I enjoyed working with Mark. He is a very patriotic person and a born again Christian. I met a lot of people in the county today and enjoyed being out in the public - it was an awesome beautiful day. I may be doing some part-time work with the Rescue Squad - helping them raise funds.

I got back home around 5 pm and rested a few minutes. Karen had supper at 5:45. We ate and watched the 6 o'clock news. Karen and I reconciled our checkbook after supper and I started on this post just after that.

PRAYER MEETING & PRAYER REQUESTS

The prayer meeting tonight was truly great. The R. B. Wilson Apt. building has a great place in the lobby. There were 17 present again. We were blessed to have a new visitor Mr. Tim Scholls. We prayed for various needs and also prayed for leaders of our nations. The folks there tell us they appreciate the prayers, songs, testimonies and the Word. We prayed for each indiviual's needs as well. Sister Donna Crossno spoke on the topic of Prayer. We were to be with Rita Trimpane, Pauline Belew, Teresa McConnell and Sister Jennie Sanders again. We appreciate the church folks who attended. . .Leon and Susie Reynolds, Jose and Lori Rivera, Cathy Coleman, Donna Crossno and Karen and the Pastor. Mariah, Brooks and Dalton were there too.

Prayer Requests include Teresa McConnell's (prayer for multiple sclerosis) also her mother who is in Jackson hospital dx with cancer; Mr. Tim Scholls who is dx with cirrhosis of the liver. Prayer for Dalton, little grandson of Cathy Coleman. He has digestive problems and will be going to Memphis for tests next Tuesday.

TODAY

After getting up, cleaning up and eating Raisin Bran for Breakfast, Karen and I went to the R. B. Wilson Apartments and taped prayer meeting announcements on the windows and doors. We saw Sister Jennie Sanders and Pauline Belew for a few minutes. They expressed exitement about the prayer meeting tonight. I also met Mr. Timothy Scholls and Rita Trimpane - both said they would be coming tonight to the prayer meeting.

Karen and I left for McKenzie around 9:30 a. and visited with Sister Marie Moore and prayed with her. She is in intense pain in her legs. We had a time of visitation and prayer with her. Karen went by and gave Sister Debbie Eaton White Wings that have come to us in the bundle we ordered. Karen visited with her for a while and also with Sister Dee Walker. I also gave Sister Eaton the "Singing News" that I have gotten monthly to give to Brother Ronnie Eaton.

After getting home at around 12:15, we rushed over to the Lenten Community Service at the First Presbyterian Church. We got there for the message by Pastor Roger Patton, Jr. The message was timely. Pastors and churches have been invited to participate in the Lenten Services throughout the time of Lent beginning today with Ash Wednesday and going 40 days from then. I am scheduled to speak on Wednesday, March 29. We also have lunch after the service. It was a refreshing time today and Karen and I met some people that we have not met thus far.

We were back at the office by 1:15. I started on some computer work and studying. I tried to add a harddrive as a slave and got a little impatient. My impatience and poor decision caused my computer crashed around 2:30 pm today (the details aren't worth telling here). I lost everything on my hard drive. I do have a backup of my files but don't have a system backup. I took my computer to the shop today. Carl the computer man is installing a larger drive for my computer and loading some of the software I lost. It will take me weeks to get back everything that I lost. O well, haste makes waste - sometimes.

Karen and I have been helping Rev. Chuck Burks and his family. We took some things by there just before prayer meeting tonight to give to them. You can read about Prayer meeting on the next post. . . . .

Thanks for stopping by and may you be blest and have a great night of rest. . .in the Lord. . .

PRAYER AND SCRIPTURE

Hallowed be thay name, Heavenly Father. Thank you for another day to worship, serve and love You. I pray for Sister Marie Moore. I ask that You touch her today. Give her strength in her body. I ask for healing for her legs and that she be healed of the diabetes. You are not limited, Heavenly Father. By faith in You, I ask for healing for members that are discouraged, that are sick physically, members that are dealing with struggles in their finances, members that are dealing with family problems, members that are hurt, members that are angry, members that are complacent - every need and problem you can solve and resolve. I ask you to open doors today for ministry and that your Holy Spirit will lead, guide and direct throughout this day. In the most blessed name of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. AMEN!

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. John 16:13-15

TODAY

Karen and I visited some today. We went by and gave Sister Bonnie Curtis a birthday card. She will be 86 tomorrow. We prayed with her and her roommate. We also visited with Betty Kirby there.

Karen continues to minister to the children at the Davis Daycare. This ministry is very rewarding to see the smiles and eyes light up on the children.

SCRIPTURE AND PRAYER

Dear Heavenly Father, it is good to come to You and I thank You for Your Son who gives us access to You. I come boldly today through Your Son. What a glorious day to be alive in You and the work that You have given me. Guide me and anoint me as I reach out to minister to those I meet today. Open doors for witnessing and sharing the gospel of our Lord Jesus. I pray for all men today. I pray that leaders in nations, countries, states, areas, regions and cities will be given greater wisdom to lead in their respective areas. I pray for President Bush and his staff. I pray for Governor Bredesen and his staff. I pray for the mayor and leaders of Huntingdon. I ask for strength and guidance for police officials all throughout the land. I pray that You will keep us in your peace. Be with the military leaders and the ones on the front lines in Iraq and other trouble places in the world.

I also pray for a greater uniting of Christians everywhere. The prayer your Son prayed in John 17:20, 21 weighs on my heart today. Heavenly father, help me to be one of those who revolts against the divisions that seperate your children. Help me to revolt against the spirit of self-exaltation and self-aggrandizing that causes some to rise up and cause schism in the body of Christ. Help me to be an instrument that is used to bring Your children closer and closer together. Make me stronger in the unity that Your Son prayed for. Deliver me from divisive spirits and divisive motivations. Cause me to melt together with Your children everywhere. Make me an instrument of peace and an instrument of scandle against the self-exalting, narcissistic, anarchy spirit. Thank You that Your Son's prayer will be ultimately answered, "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." In the Wonderful, Powerful Name that is above every name - Jesus Christ! AMEN!

PRAISE REPORT

Sister Donna Crossno informed me that her grandson, little Ethan Pyburn who has mild downes sydrome, heart surgery prognosis has been revised and some of the problems that the doctors thought would be long-term and continued problems have now been listed as very minor. For this we give the Lord praise. The church has been in prayer with his mother Denise and father Allen for this child. Ethan is a special gift of the Lord and we thank God for him.

PRAYER REQUEST

YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Thank God for a great day Sunday in our am and pm services. There were 5 in the altar Sunday morning and we were blessed to have the newer people that continue to come to our services. The Davis family was with us including Jimmy Davis and wife Virginia, Jimmy's mother Willowdene, Jimmy and Virginia's Son Jeff and wife April and three children (Joshua, Jonah, Jordan) Daughter Carla Lawton and two children. Mike, Lisa and Tina were there (sorry I don't remember the last names and have misplaced where I wrote them down) Lisa and Tina were in the altar. Also Tyler Nicholson, Mr. Manus and Son Cody were there. We are thankful for Rev. Churck Burks and wife Ragene who are coming and assisting in the ministry. Praise God for one who was saved.

Sunday evening was a glorious time. We were blessed by the music of Mark (Moses) Cunningham. I met him at Wal-Mart as he was playing and singing. I invited him and he came and sang some gospel and patriotic songs. Mark is an advocate for the ten commandments and gave the church an American flag with the ten commandments on it. We enjoyed his singing and testimony.

I walked 2.5 miles this morning as I meditated and prayed. I called and set up the prayer meeting for Wednesday night at the R. B. Wilson Apartment lobby. There are 2 new tenants there now and we are inviting everyone to come that will. Last month we had 5 from the apartments along with Sister Jennie Sanders, 88 year old member of the church. Karen and I have been busy getting tax records, monthly reports, and other office work done today as well.

Jason called yesterday and today. The Renaissance Choir left Friday and sang in Mt. Pleasant, AR Fri. nite and then went on to Marshall Texas and sang Sat nite then again Sun. morning. Then traveled to Houston and perfromed last nite and today had the day off. He called from a mall in Houston where he and the some other choir members were. They are to be in Austin on Tues nite for a concert. Then off to San Antonio for another concert on Wed. nite and at Sea World on Thurs. mid-morning and the rest of the day free at Sea World on Thurs. Then on to Bedford, TX the next day to sing that nite. Then to Forth Worth to sing Friday nite and then to Dallas Sunday for a concert. Then leave for home Sunday evening. We miss him but know that he is enjoying traveling and singing.

LEADERSHIP

Definition: "Leadership is the discovery and disclosure of group goals, together with the delegation of authority and responsibility to the proper group members, and the direction of group activity by an individual who has the ability to guide the group to the accomplishment of the task." Dr. Ray Parker, Leadership Course, Trinity Theological Seminary

"Some people have the capacity to be good managers but not strong leaders." Anon

"Leadership is power and power without ethics is venal and self-corrupting and finally leaves one withered and empty without grace or substance." James L. Fisher

"Living movements do not come of committees." J. H. Newman

PRAYER AND SCRIPTURE

God's creation is shining today with a brilliant clarity of sunshine and gentle, cool, breeze. Thank you Heavenly Father for another day to love You and serve You. The Psalmist wrote, "Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever" 106:1. To grasp all the goodness of God would not be possible for my finite mind but I thank You and Praise You for Your goodness and Your mercy. Thanks for breath, life, sight, hearing, taste, smell, feelings, water, food, light, all the many creations that You have created. Thank You for my family, friends, leaders, and neighbors. Thank You for my church and the people there and the times of coming together to worship. Thank You for my wife, children, grandchildren, and other family members. Thank You for fellow pastors and ministers. Thank you for the Bible and for the Holy Spirit that leads, guides, teaches, comforts, shows me more of Jesus and convicts when I fail and sin. Thank You for mercy that is everlasting and ever-healing, and ever-nudging, and ever-melting, and ever-calling to any who have strayed from You. O Mighty, Holy, Glorious God eternal - I just thank You today - for You and all You are and all You give and all You do. As the song that Dottie Rambo wrote says - "I didn't come to ask You for anything, I just came to talk with You Lord. You've answered a million prayers or more, that I forgot to thank You for, I just came to talk with You Lord." THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU O GOD, THE ONE GOD OF ISREAL, THE FATHER OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST. . . . . . . .

DEVOTION

Wall-to-wall Obedience

"I've been trying to eat healthier. As part of the new regimen, I tried a protein shake for breakfast. Have you ever tasted liquid carpet? Surely liquid carpet has to be better than this stuff. It coated every molar in a weird wall-to-wall sort of way. For the longest time I felt like I needed to shave my tongue. Surely something is wrong with that stuff. Sticking to a healthier diet doesn't necessarily have to come with a hairy tongue, does it?"

Praying According to God's Word

"I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years. So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications" (Dan. 9:2-3).

"Have you ever wondered if it's biblical to pray for things that God has already promised in His Word to do? Is it proper to pray, say, for the salvation of sinners, knowing that God will redeem all the elect anyway, or for Christ's return, knowing that it is a sure thing? Daniel gives us a clear answer."

Quote

"We have staked the whole of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God."
James Madison, Fourth President of the United States

A Controlled Burn

"So many well-meaning pastors get wounded because they don't have the right skills to lead through change.

So the things that we normally associate with pastoral ministry—preaching and pastoral care—are not what's needed to reform a church? You have to preach, teach, and do pastoral care. That's essential. But on top of that, a reformer needs a separate skill set. They must be thinking, How am I going to make this culture change? How can I inject a new mindset for ministry among these people? How can I get them to think about the church as a mission that's sent out instead of just people coming in?

What skills do we need that don't seem especially pastoral? Ministry is a spiritual enterprise, but it has a social component. Pastors need to understand the social structures of a congregation. They need to be cultural anthropologists diagnosing the factors that prevent growth. . . . . .

So many churches say they want change, but they really want someone to bring back 1959. And that won't work."

PRAYER MEETING

The prayer meeting at the Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center was great. Three were 15 present and five of them were residents of the facility. We were blessed to minister to Charlie Sutton, Bonnie Curtis, Mary Rosel, Catherine Parker and Betty Kirby from the center. We prayed for several requests, sang worship songs and some testified. Sister Parker (one of the two African American sisters present) sang, "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." That is a treat for us as she sings it with great spirit and enthusiasm. We prayed for the leaders throughout the world, in government, in churches, in the homes. We prayed for lost loved ones and for revival to break out in our community. Each one of the members who attended have made positive statements about the prayer meetings and the outreach to minister to those in our community who desire to be in church but cannot for physical reasons.

Sister Bonnie Curtis, member of the church, testified and thanked the church for coming. We sang an early happy birthday to her. She will be 86 next week.

We thank God for this opportunity to minister in our community.

DEVOTION

My Utmost for His Highest

Have you ever felt the pain, inflicted by the Lord, at the very center of your being, deep down in the most sensitive area of your life? The devil never inflicts pain there, and neither can sin nor human emotions. Nothing can cut through to that part of our being but the Word of God. "Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ’Do you love Me?’ "

A Few Moments With God. . .

A pastor tells about a woman in his congregation. She is one of those over-committed types, always frantically busy, never stopping to catch her breath. "I'm too busy" is her constant cry. The pastor finally asked the woman, "How do you ever expect God to get hold of you if you never stand still?" It's a good question.

PRAYER MEETING TONIGHT

Prayer Meeting is scheduled again for tonight at the Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center. Prayer meeting there last month was exceptional as we sang, prayed, testified and ministered to three visitors from the center.

Prayer Meeting begins at 6:45 pm in the dining hall of the the E wing. Sister Bonnie Curtis is telling her friends there and inviting anyone there to come.

DEVOTIONS

The Piercing Question
Peter’s response to this piercing question is considerably different from the bold defiance he exhibited only a few days before when he declared, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!"
A Few Moments With God
Have you ever moved into a new home? What's the most common complaint in getting ready for such a move? "How did I accumulate so much stuff?" Most of us have too much stuff. Too much stuff can be a problem for missionaries. The more things we accumulate the more our freedom is restricted. . .
