PRAYER

CONDITIONS OF PREVAILING PRAYER, By Charles G. Finney

But I wish to call your attention more especially to the restitution which we are to make to God. And in respect to this, I do not mean to imply that we can make good our wrongs against God in the sense of really restoring that which we have withheld or taken away; but we can render to him whatever yet remains. The time yet to be given us we can devote to him, although the past has gone beyond recall. Our talents and influence and wealth, yet to be used, we may freely and fully use for God; and manifestly, so much as this, God and reason require of us, and it were vain for us to hope to be accepted in prayer unless we seriously intend to render all the future to God. . . .

. . .Surely this is an all-important enquiry. God will not hear us unless He sees that we have such reasons as will satisfy his own infinite intelligence--such reasons that He can wisely act in view of them;--such that He will not be ashamed to have the universe know that on such grounds He answered our prayers. They must be such that he will not be ashamed of them himself. For we should evermore consider that all God's doings are one day to be perfectly known. It will yet be known why he answered every acceptable prayer, and why he refused to answer each one that was not acceptable.

Hence if we are to offer prayer, or to do any thing else in which we expect God to sympathize with us, we ought to have good and sufficient reasons for what we ask or do.

You can not help seeing this at your first glance at the subject. Your prayer must not be selfish but benevolent--else how can God hear it? Will he lend himself to patronize and befriend your selfishness?

GREAT TIME TODAY

Thank the Lord for another great time this morning. Several were in the altar after the morning worship time and message. We are continuing to seek God for revival, renewal, and the mighty move of the Holy Spirit. It was good to see Brother Leon Reynold's stepson and spouse with us today from Michigan. It was good to see several visitors in our midst. Church lets make these folks welcome and let them know we want them in our services.

No service tonight to give our families time together. This is every fourth Sunday evening.

BOOK REVIEW

Christ Centered Preaching: Redeeming The Expository Sermon. 2nd ed., author, Bryan Chapell. Published by Baker Publishing: Grand Rapids, MI, 2005. ISBN 0-8010-2798-5

Chapell's book is becoming a classic since the first edition in 1994. The second edition has some added material but holds true to the tenor of the first edition. Chapell focuses on the FCF (Fallen Condition Focus) of man that is a part of Biblical preaching and the element of "redemption" which addresses the FCF. Chapell brings the emphasis of Christ as being the center of any scripture text - Old or New Testament. The book is a great help for any preacher, teacher, evangelist or anyone who wants to present a more Christ centered messge. I recommend it highly.

HOMEGOING OF HOMER ARTHUR GORDON

Tonight Karen and I visited with the family of my dad's brother, Homer Gordon. Homer passed on this past Tuesday. His body lies in state at the Boyd Funeral Home in Ashland City, TN. Visitation is tonight from 5-8 pm and all day Friday until the funeral at 7 pm. The graveside service will be 10 am Saturday morning at the Pleasant Hill cemetary. It was good to see the many family members and friends, yet it was a sad but happy time. Homer was a dedicated Christian man and his children testify to the fact. His son we call Bubba said tonight, "People tell me I keep them laughing like my dad and I don't think of anyone in this world I would rather be like." Thats a powerful statement from a son. The three daughters were there along with Paul, his only surviving brother and two sisters, Pearline and Betty. Two other sisters were unable to attend (Katherine and Gladys both in their 80's. Many other of my cousins were there too numerous to mention and besides I can't remember them all.

Homer is resting with the Lord. We are praying for the family.

CONFESSIONS, TEARS, TESTIMONIES

Great moments of sharing burdens, testimonies and what revival means to each one was evident in our Wed. evening time together with the Lord. Tears flowed as each one shared remembrance of past revivals and God's presence and manifestations in those revivals. Confessions were offered as we shared the lack of commitment to seeking God. The challenge went forth to keep our affection and desire focused on Him who brings revival, salvation, sanctification and convicts the hearts of those who do not know Him. Prayer and fasting was emphasized to bring us to a more powerful relationship with God and to help get us focused and align us with what God wants to do through us, among us and around us outside the walls of our "box" where we have often tried to put God. Cries of "We must seek Him" and "Will our children and youth see the manifestations that God wants to manifest or will we be lax in seeking Him" was spoken. Tears of confession, repentance and commitment flowed. Cries of, "We must be ready for those who are coming who need us to love them, help lead them, mentor them, help disciple them," went forth. Cries of, "We must seek Him to bring back those who have been snatched from us by the enemy," went forth. REVIVAL, REVIVAL, REVIVAL! WE ARE HUNGRY AND THIRSTY FOR HIM AND HIS DESIRES FOR US!

YESTERDAY AND TODAY - PARIS REVIVAL

Yesterday school was closed in Nashville due to some snow in parts of Davidson County. Karen went to the school and did some work later in the morning for about an hour. I studied and did some computer work most of the day.

Today while Karen was back in school I went to Trevecca Nazarene Univ. library and did some research, sermon prep., and reading from about 8 am till 12:15 pm. Then I went to the bank, took some things by the school for Karen and did some more studying in the room from about 1:30-3:15. Karen and I left for home and arrived at 5:20 pm. Jason was home with a couple of friends from Bethel College who we enjoyed meeting. We did some quick unloading and got dressed to go to the revival at Paris.

We enjoyed the Revival service tonight at the Paris church. Bishop Wayne Hall, Fields of the Wood Director, is the Evangelist. We enjoyed being with Pastor C. C. Winchester and the fine folks at Paris. Brother Hall preached a great message. After the service Pastor Winchester invited us to go fellowship with them. We enjoyed the fellowship, the camaraderie and, of course, the Wendy's chili and burgers on this cold evening. Sister Hall, Sister Winchester and Karen enjoyed fellowship as well.

NO VALENTINE FUDDY DUDDY HERE

Just in case someone wants to know, I gave my Valentine, my lovely wife Karen, a bouquet of flowers for Valentines. She was surprised when I ask her to come to the front Sunday Morning and told all the congregation that she is my Valentine and gave her the flowers which were mostly the color of our wedding - lavender. She is my Valentine. I also called each one of my children, my sister, my mother and my brother and told them I love them.

Below is a copy of an email that I received today from Sister Annette Taylor, the Harvest Partner Coordinator. Let us continue to pray for Bishop James and his family.

Sent: Sunday, February 11, 2007 12:00 AMTo: harvestpartners@cogop.orgSubject: Prayer request

Dear Brothers and Sisters.

I need prayer. Just struggling with the emotions of sadness and grief to day. It is the strongest than it has been in a while. I know when you lose a loved one, a healthy grieving process must happen and I do not try to suppress it when it does. But I need prayer today. I am just missing Getrudha and all the things that made her such special Friend and wife.

Thank you. James Ntezimana

May I not hope that the God who came in power to the eleven defeated men on the day of Pentecost, and by their means turned the world upside down, will come in power in this dark generation and do again His mighty works? Dr. Willam Edwin Sangster

Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007

Thank the Lord for another great Sunday. We continue to see God's blessings being poured out on us. This month begins our emphasis on revival. The message "Engaged In Spiritual Warfare" challenged each one to use the "prayer bones" and be involved in the battles that we must face - fleshly carnal will and demonic influences. We want revival and it will come as we seek Him and obey Him.

Sunday evening was Super Bowl Sunday and several of the youth went to a party. The youth will be involved in leading our Sunday evening services in the coming weeks.
